Many friends use the VMware virtual machine, but how do you use it? We have found 101 pieces of practical experience summary of VMware virtual machine for your reference in practical work.
1, VMware virtual machine experience support Guest OS:

VMWare supports Guest OS as follows:
MS-DOS, Win3.1, Win9x/Me, WinNT, Win2000, WinXP, Win.Net, Linux, FreeBSD, NetWare6, Solaris x86.

Unsupported Guest OS:
BeOS, IBM OS/2 and Warp, Minix, QNX, SCO Unix, UnixWare.

2, VMware virtual machine experience of VMWare simulation hardware

The hardware simulated by VMWare includes: motherboard, memory, hard disk (IDE and SCSI), DVD/ CD-ROM, soft drive, network card, sound card, serial port, parallel port and USB port.

VMWare does not simulate the graphics card. VMWare provides a package called vmware-tools for each Guest OS to enhance the display and mouse capabilities of Guest OS.

The hardware simulated by VMWare is of a fixed model and has nothing to do with the actual hardware of Host OS

For example, if linux is installed on one machine using VMWare, the entire linux copy can be run on other machines with VMWare, without having to install it again.

VMWare can use ISO files as cd-rom

For example, the linux ISO file downloaded from the Internet can be installed directly without disk carving.

5. VMWare provides three options for the operation of Guest OS

(1) persistent
Anything you do in the Guest OS run is saved instantly

(2) undoable
Guest OS shutdown will ask whether to save the operation being done

(3) nonpersistend
Anything done in the Guest OS run is not done after shutdown.

This is a very useful feature if you're going to do a software test or experiment, and you can play it to your heart's content, killing Guest OS an infinite number of times.

6. Two network Settings of VMWare:

(1) Bridged way

In this way, Guest OS IP can be set up in the same network segment as Host OS, Guest OS is equivalent to a single machine in the network, other machines in the network can access Guest OS, Guest OS can also access other machines in the network, of course, with Host OS two-way access is not a problem.

(2) NAT way

This also allows two-way access between Host OS and Guest OS. However, other machines in the network cannot access Guest OS, and Guest OS can access other machines in the network through Host OS using the NAT protocol.

NAT IP address configuration method: Guest OS will automatically obtain IP address with DHCP, Host VMWare services will assign IP to Guest OS, and then if you want to use IP fixed every time you start IP, you can directly set IP in Guest OS.

1 generally speaking, Bridged is the most convenient. But if Host OS is win2000 and the network cable is not plugged in, the network is probably not available (most machines with PCI network CARDS are), so NAT mode can only be used.

7. VMWare simulates Guest OS's hard drive with Host OS's file

One Guest OS hard drive corresponds to one or more files in Host OS. If you write 100M to Guest OS, the virtual hard disk file in Host OS will increase by 100M. Delete this 100M file in Guest OS, Host OS virtual hard disk file will not be reduced. The next time you write to Guest OS, you can continue to use this space. vmware-tools also provides the shrink function, which immediately frees up unused space and reduces the size of virtual hard drive files in Host OS.

In order to reduce the waste of hard disk space and avoid using shrink frequently, it is better to hang another hard disk in Guest OS to store files that are not commonly used, such as installation files, and then reformat the hard disk after using it.

8, VMware virtual machine experience vmware-tools

vmware-tools enhances the display and mouse capabilities of Guest OS. vmware-tools comes with VMWare. When installing Guest OS, there is a sentence in the status bar of VMWare indicating that vmware-tools is not installed. Click this sentence to install vmware-tools. It can also be installed through the menu: settings-> vmware tools install

If Guest OS is windows, vmware-tools will be installed automatically. If linux is linux, the installation file of vmware-tools will be mount to the cd-rom drive (virtual mode, no cd-rom at this time), enter mount point to the cd-rom drive and then install copy.

For some Guest OS, such as Solaris x86, NetBSD 1.x, OpenBSD 2.x and Caldera OpenLinux 1.3, VMWare does not provide vmware-tools.

linux is installed in VMWare

Don't install in graphical mode, install in text mode. When installing Xserver, select the default configuration and ignore any installation errors. After installation, do not start X. Install vmware-tools and then start X.

10, VMware virtual machine experience if you do not use a sound card

Don't add a sound card to the VMWare; the sound card has a slight impact on performance.

11, VMware virtual machine practical experience if you do not often use the optical drive
